Green Lantern

Our original plan was to go to Toby's Supper Club for their much-ballyhooed fish fry. Rumor was it's worth the hour-or-two wait, but we figured we might be able to sneak in before the crowd if we arrived soon after 5 p.m. However, as we saw the parking lot was full and cars already were lined halfway up the frontage road before 5:30, we realized we needed to rework our Toby's early-arrival strategy for another night, and we drove our rumbling stomachs down Hwy. 51 to the Green Lantern in McFarland.

Green Lantern is an unpretentious and somewhat sprawling bar and restaurant with a frame-worthy view of Lake Waubesa. The menu centers around steak, seafood, and steak and seafood combos that are at least 40 percent less the prices you would pay in a more schmancy establishment in Madison or Middleton.

I ordered the lightly-breaded Blue Gill and opted for sweet potato fries as the side. It also came with a side salad and dinner roll. The fish were crispy and flavorful, and the portion was just right. The breading may have slightly overshadowed the natural fish taste, but overall it was a tasty and satisfying meal.

My dinner companion ordered the Battered Cod with a side of Lobster Bisque. The soup was a little salty but still good, he said, and the cod ranked among his top five fish fries (and we have been to quite a few). I tried a couple of bites and found it OK though a little bit mushy between the batter and the fish. Between the two I would recommend the Blue Gill, or perhaps try the lightly-breaded option for the Cod.

The tarter sauce was available in a squeeze bottle next to the ketchup, which is convenient since they never give you enough in the little plastic cups, though I would have preferred it colder. Service was excellent. I would like to return to see how their steak and crab combo stacks up.
